The Nutcracker
The Nutcracker is a timeless ballet that has captured audiences for generations with its enchanting story and mesmerizing performances. Inspired by the magic of this classic tale, I designed and developed an interactive AR experience to bring the beloved story to life in a fresh and immersive way. This project reimagines the Nutcracker ballet, blending tradition with technology to create a captivating adventure for audiences of all ages.
Project Overview
The Nutcracker AR experience consists of five interactive scenes that follow the main events of the ballet. Each scene invites players to engage with the story through interactive elements, fostering a deeper connection to the narrative. Created using Zapworks, the experience leverages augmented reality to transform the user's environment into a stage for the Nutcracker's magic.
Scene 1
Clara Receives the Nutcracker: The experience begins in a warm, festive setting where Clara is gifted the Nutcracker. Players can tap start to see Clara dance with nutcracker.
Scene 2
The Nutcracker Transforms: As the story unfolds, the Nutcracker magically transforms into a boy. Interactive elements allow players to witness this pivotal moment from different angles, enhancing the drama.
Scene 3
The Battle with the Mouse King: This action-packed scene depicts the boy Nutcracker fighting the Mouse King. Players can tap on the Mouse King to trigger dramatic combat sequences.
Scene 4
Meeting the Snow Queen: The adventure continues with the enchanting Snow Queen’s appearance in a wintry setting. Players can tap on the snow queen to unlock the snowflakes and her magical dance.
Scene 5
The Sugar Plum Fairy’s World: The experience culminates in the vibrant, colorful land of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Players can tap on sweets and fairies to trigger animations and unlock the final celebration.
Scene Design
The set designs were influenced by classic ballet theaters and marionette children’s theater styles, blending elegance with charm to create immersive environments that felt both magical and theatrical.

Character Design
The character designs were inspired by research into Nutcracker ballet costumes and classic Nutcracker character designs, reinterpreted with a fresh perspective.

Technical Challenges and Solutions
One of the biggest challenges was ensuring that the AR experience was both visually rich and technically efficient. To manage file sizes without compromising visual quality, assets were optimized by reducing texture file sizes and the number of polygons used in models. This approach allowed the AR experience to run smoothly while maintaining the intricate details that captured the spirit of the Nutcracker.
